365 Days of Memories
There is something to be said for trying to record the small moments of your day for it is all of these moments that together make life worth living.
A few years ago I participated in a challenge to take a photo a day for a month. The goal was to photograph different aspects of your life, different times of your day, and different people in your world. I found it incredibly challenging to try to come up with something different to photograph for each of 30 days, but when I was done, the photographs I had taken gave me great insight into my own life.
Looking back on the pictures, it was as though I had spent 30 days looking at my life through the eyes of a child. When trying to decide what to photograph each day, I focused on some of the smaller less exciting moments. In the end, I realized that it is many of the small moments and things that make me who am I. It is these items that together tell my story and also make me happy.
This year, I have challenged myself to undertake a huge project. My intent is to take a photograph each and everyday of something that is important to me, important to my life or my family, important to something that is taking place that day, or just plain fun.
I want to have a visual memory of my entire year, from beginning to end. This year began with my taking down the Christmas tree, and organizing decorations before I pack them away for another year. While small, minute tasks, the pictures of these tasks provide a view into my day, my traditions and my organizing behaviour.
I am sure the task will be daunting. I am sure that not long into the challenge, I will want to stop, I will want to kick myself, and I will wonder why, with everything else that is going on that I challenged myself to complete this task.
I know that for this project to succeed I will need to write something down each day about the photograph I have taken, or what I did that day. I will need to decide on how I am going to present the photographs and the related text. I know that like always, I will change my mind partway through the project so I will need to make the presentation side of things alterable, just in case.
In the end, I will have not only preserved memories, but I will have created a memory. I will have learned about myself and hopefully will have a better idea of what is important to me how these things fit into my life.
I challenge you to play along with me. If a photo a day is too much choose a photo a week and pick a specific day to take the photos.
Happy Snapping!
