Tutorial Thursday - Fridge Magnets

Friday, July 11th, 2008

Here is a fun and easy project to do.

I love to alter things and I also love to include my kids in some of my projects. We sat down a while back and created fridge magnets from coasters. You can purchase coasters in bulk and most LSS’s or online. You can collect them when you go out to supper or at the bars. You also have the option of making your own out of chipboard!!

Pick some patterned papers and a wallet size photo. Adhere the paper to your coaster/chipboard. The girls inked the edges of the coaster. We then added thier photos and some flowers and ribbon. They found these neat alpha brads in my stash and we added their names to it. We also applied some rub ons as well. Next we adhered a magnet to the back of the coaster.

Viola….. some fun and simple fridge magnets!

I plan on making some more this weekend with the girls.

If you create any magnets please email me at thynner5@yahoo.ca and put “CCAS Magnets” in the subject line. You may also link it here on the blog. You will earn a ballot for this month’s Blog Prize!!

Altered Digital Paper Bag Album

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

I really wanted to share a wonderful tutorial that Amy posted on the Hawt Mama Blog. It is wonderfully written and the end result is sure to please.

In 2004 we went to California for a wedding and I took a lot of beach pictures of my son jumping in the ocean for the first time. My son LOVED it so I decided to make him a little paper bag album that he can keep in his room and look at whenever he wanted.

Supplies Used:
He’ll Break Your Heart Kit
adhesive
paper trimmer
hole punch
3 or 4 paper bags (any colour)
white cardstock (or if you have some patterned cardstock that you won’t ever use that has a white back to it you can use that)
ink, brads, blossoms. ribbon, buttons, binder ring

First thing I did was create 12 mini quickpages, 2 cover pages and 10 inside pages. Traci has some great Quick Albums available for a lot of her kits so you can avoid this step if you wanted to use those.

I sized the pages down to 5×5 and a couple down to 4.5×4.5 and printed them out on my white cardstock and then cut them down to size.

I will be using 3 paper bags for this project. I folded each paper bag in half making sure there is a good crease on the fold. You may want to stagger your pages so one half isn’t thicker than the other.

The next step is to punch holes in your paper bags. Once you have finished that its time to glue on all your pages. After my pages were glued on I inked all the edges of the paper bag with dark brown ink. Next I added extra embellishments to the pages to make them pop with that 3 dimensional look. Then I lined up all the pages again, put the binder ring on and tied some ribbon around the ring.

Thats pretty much all there is to it! Hope you have fun making yours and thanks for hanging out on the blog with me today!

Thanks Amy for letting me post it here on our blog as well. I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did.

Hybrid CD Memory Magnet

Monday, July 9th, 2007

I wanted to share with everyone this great tutorial by Amy Duquette. It is an awesome project and it is really well written too.

CD Memory Magnet by Amy Duquette

This project is perfect for school photos, sports team photos or for a favourite photo that you may have that you want to keep around you so you can see it often. I am using a photo of my grandma and my son that was taken a few days ago. This will become a very special picture for my son as he grows up because my grandma was just diagnosed with lung cancer. He will be able to take this magnet with him in his many journey’s life has for him.

Digital Supply List
Reckless Kit and brown tag from Faded Tee kit by Traci Reed available at Scrapbook Graphics
Circle journaling - Daniela Peuss
Font - Digs My Heart

Paper Supply List:
1 CD
1 magnet (I am using an old business card sized magnet)
1 sheet of white cardstock 8 1/2 x 11 (if you don’t have any on hand a good tip is to use the back of a sheet of patterned paper that you don’t like the pattern and won’t use…just make sure its thickness is that of cardstock)
scissors
embellishments
adhesive

Step 1
First thing you need to do is create the basic layout of the magnet in your favourite image editting software. I am using Photoshop CS. I created a 4 3/4 inch circle on a 5×5 inch document and filled it with white. Next I opened up the paper I wanted to use and resized it down to 5×5 and then SELECT>ALL and closed the paper without saving. I went back to my circle layout and with the circle selected I EDIT>PASTE INTO the paper. Another way to get the paper to fit into your circle is to past the paper on a new layer and then group the layers (ctrl + G) and then LAYER>MERGE VISIBLE and voila there is your circle.

Once that step is done you can continue adding your digital elements and even your photo like I did and then print it out on your cardstock. Make sure you use the correct settings on your printer to get the best print out. If you want to add some dimension and texture to the magnet you can print the photo out by itself and glue it on or use pop dots.

Step 2
The Next step is to add whatever extra embellishments you want to your circle. In my case I added 2 blossoms by Prima and a black brad from Hot Off The Press and inked the edge with green fluid chalk from Colorbox. You can add as much as you want or as little as you want, its totally up to your personal taste.

Step 3
Next its time to adhere the magnet to the CD. I used double sided tape to do this to make sure it really sticks!

Step 4
Almost done! All you need to do now is glue the circle to the CD. Again to make sure it stays put I used doublesided tape. Thats all there is to it. Simple, easy and fun and kids will love this project too!

I hope you enjoyed learning something new.
