In honor of the upcoming US federal Memorial Day holiday and as an Air Force veteran, I thought it would be honorable and fun to pay a little bit of a tribute to our armed forces and offer a font that had somewhat of a military style appearance. Armalite Riffle looks a lot like the stenciling that we had to use on our military issue uniforms back in basic training.
Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in US service. It began back after our Civil War and was officially made a national holiday in 1971. It was originally called Decoration Day because on this day, the graves of fallen soldiers would be decorated by those observing. Now days, American flags are typically placed on each grave and our President pays tribute by placing a wreath on the grave of the unknown soldier so as to remember all.
OK, so enough of the history lesson… I thought we would also add a challenge to this weeks featured font. The goal of the challenge is to create and decorate a scrapbook page using the Armalite Font. The challenging part is to create your page in honor of anyone who has served or is serving in a military armed forces. They need not necessarily be American. They can have fallen or survived. They can be young or old, known or unknown. The point is to simply take a moment and remember or at least conscientiously think about someone that has or may someday have to fight for you to protect a freedom that so many of us often take for granted.
